I’m a runner, and I’ve been (sort of) practicing the polarized method for the past 6 months or so (truthfully, I’ve mostly been running slow in Z1-Z2 and adding the occasional fartlek interval).
I’m happy to say that my aerobic endurance is improving but sad to say that my top-end speed is crap because I’ve been bad about getting in the interval work consistently.

And, it seems to me, flies in the face of the polarized training method.
