I was fascinated by Trevor Connor (I believe) explaining that there are two pathways of glycogen storing. One with insulin, and one without, just due to exercise. Does this really mean the pancreas recognizes the ongoing effort and will abstain from spilling out insulin?
I never heard of that. But it explains so much.
I have been very prone to exercise-induced hypoglycemia all my life, and it can be awful (worse than a ‘normal’ bonk coming from empty tanks). I have to be careful when to take the last meal, snack or sugary drink before an exercise. Never happens when I start on an empty stomach, which is why I do all my runs fasted when running early in the day.
But once I started with the exercise, usually I can take in all the sugary snacks and drinks I want without that issue (though I always make sure I can keep that up until done, so, not taking one gel at km 15 in a 30 km run).
I never found anyone who also suffered from this and was told a few times to check for diabetes or some other pancreas disease because of it (Which I have, with no result).
